Basketball Diaries

I finally got around to watching the movie version of Jim Carroll's "Basketball Diaries". I haven't read the book, which is odd since his "Forced Entries" is one of my favorite novels.

When it came out in the '90s, I was dating a huge Jim Carroll fan, and seeing a Hollywood version was blasphemy. To my aged eyes, Leonardo Di Caprio and Co did a solid job. I remember the school shooting fantasy sequence stirring everyone up at the time.

I'm not so sure this hasn't been a fantasy since schools began! The sad reality is too many guns, wars, and video games that desensitize us to human life have taken their toll on our culture. This scene, like the weekly losses to gun violence, hardly merits a headline the day after.

Now we're all on the nod. Whether it's actual opiates or our phones wagging our tales. To quote Stiv Bators "Open Your Eyes."
