Booked For Safekeeping

I love the short documentaries on TMC. They are real time capsules. I was fascinated watching one called "Booked for Safekeeping" from the 1950's which dealt with the challenge law enforcement goes thru when dealing with mental disturbance. The sad thing is NOTHING HAS CHANGED. With no safe place to divert someone, they still arrest and take them to jail. The cops in this doc exhibited all the good qualities that you would want from a first responder but on Friday night their options are limited.

As a person who has worked in social services my whole adult life.  I find turning it over to social workers to be a frightening prospect. Especially since even short term stabilization seems to be something that society will not pay for via the existing (broken) free market health system. Social workers riding  along are a better option as a check and balance as long as they don't get too cozy with each other,
