Hazy Lazy Days of Summer

Walking around in the smoky haze this morning (the denizens of Summerdale and Harper's Ferry seemingly allied together last night to liberate South Points from the age of reason), reminded me of humid mornings of my youth when I'd anticipate/dread 2 a day football practices. I did this in 9th and 10th grade until i seperated my shoulder one time too many and I didn't want to start lifting weights to "bulk" up.

It was incredible discipline or madness depending on your perspective. The theory being that if you could tough out over-exertion in 90 degree weather you were fit for whatever the Fall may throw at you. Especially heinous was running "the Hill" at Leathers field off Holmes Street. You did it in groups of 4, full speed and would gasp to catch your breath until it was your turn to go again!!

I was fortunate to be in the first year that they allowed any water. Even then it was a grudging acknowledgement to hydration and health. You had to bring your own. The best way was to freeze a 2 liter bottle the night before and let it thaw until they gave you the lone water break at the 90 minute mark.

For some reason, I think the next few weeks are going to be like that camp for better or worse. So i'll get up early to enjoy the morning dew and the purple haze. I'll look for the shade wherever I can in the afternoon.
