Somewhere on the lazy river (Styx)

saw several of my friends express grief at the passing of Robbie Robertson from the Band. He is undoubtedly an icon of a bygone era. His songs and persona are captured in good form in Scorsese's "Last Waltz."

It could be that cinematic depiction that makes us think he was more influential on the zeitgeist. The reality is he did nothing significant after 1974. His solo albums weren't great.

A parallel comparison is the Alice Cooper Group. Alice is still revered, but all of his best songs are on the greatest hits album when he was a member of a democratic group whose name he assumed.

That ACG's greatest hits and The Band's Greatest hits were in regular rotation in my older brother's room back at 212 Juniper in the 70s. They were well-worn album sleeves but had no seeds or stems since they weren't gatefold.

The "golden age" of album rock artists is dying off due to natural causes. It's inevitable.
