The Clash "The only band that matters" The Legendary Broadcasts

The early 2000's were the best and the worst of times for vinyl collecting. People dumped their collections for pennies on the dollar (not me bucko) as CD's ruled the roost. Now it's the same trend for CD's, bargains everywhere.

I'm fond of a series from Coda records that features multiple disc FM broadcasts of some of my favorites. I enjoyed their Kinks and Animals compilations. My latest is a 4 disc Clash album with concerts from 1979 (pre-London Calling) to 1983 the US Festival and the big split between Mick and Joe.

The best is Disc two from the Capitol Theatre in March 1980. They play songs from all three of their albums in passing gear. Disc three is the infamous Tokyo gig in 1982 which they have sited in several documentaries as the reason they decided to fire Topper for his Heroin addiction. Topper is competent, like say the drummer from the Jeff Barnes Band, but they struggle to ignite to their full velocity.

The US Festival is fun for the hypocrisy of Joe Strummer. He's making millions and whining about wealth distribution. Pete Howard is again competent, like the drummer from Los Moskeweto's perhaps, but something is still missing.

The multiple versions of (White Man) in Hammersmith Palais are all great. A bargain for under $20.
